I love to paint horses, it's my favorite subject, it relaxes me and it almost never gets frustrating.

It was daytime and I passed this coffeeshop in Rotterdam where a man was sitting outside with a sigaret and a drink. You could see vaguely inside the shop.
Add the guys plastic bag, the flowers and bicycle and I saw all the ingredients I would love to paint in 1 painting.

This is my favorite place to go and so close to home! I made this painting for friends who work there. They always move very fast so I had a couple of nights where I shot many secret pictures, they were all blurry :) A little memory helped me out to make this painting.

I made this painting inspired by the 'complimentary challenge' on dpw. The purples against the yellows of the fire made it really stand out. Also a bit of blue against orange and a dash of green against the red. Why stick with one set of complimentaries, right? Happy it didn't turn out like a palette of colors. Strange that I hardly used any umber, which I normally use abundantly in my darks. Fun challenge!

There is this lovely chocolate shop in Voorschoten, I can make a bunch of paintings from it. It's great from the outside, the inside and the little handmade chocolates are art by itself. I will certainly get back there for more inspiration.

I made some pictures of the progress:

I tone the background with a thinned down burned umber. I set up the big shapes with thin burned umber. I wipe out the areas that aren't right.

 

Because I want to finish this painting in one day, I add the important colors I don't want contaminated with dark or light, first.

 

 

 I quickly block in the rest. So far it's always fun. From now on it can go uphill or downhill..

 

 

Adding details, take distance, don't overwork it: done!

I just need it regularly, to paint a beautiful horse. I am back at the stables weekly and reinfected with the horse virus. You like them or you don't. I did for as long as I can remember.
